Summary of the Role

The Training Manager for Apprenticeships at Heritage Skills Academy (HSA) plays a key strategic and operational role in leading high-quality delivery of apprenticeship training in heritage engineering and classic vehicle restoration. The post holder will lead curriculum development, manage a team of tutors, drive quality improvement, and act as a key figure in Ofsted readiness and safeguarding. This role demands a deep commitment to preserving traditional skills, understanding the changing needs of the industry and ensuring outstanding outcomes for apprentices and employers.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership
  • Be part of the Ofsted and QAR working groups.
  • Manage a team of tutors and technician.
  • Lead weekly scheduling and planning across all delivery sites, including “Week Ahead” and “End of Week” review meetings.
  • Hold regular performance reviews and contribute to business planning and growth targets.
  • Ensure that all safeguarding responsibilities are discharged, acting as Designated Safeguarding Lead.
  • Contribute and be part of development and strategic planning and be part of Senior Management Team meetings.

Curriculum and Quality Management

  • Lead curriculum development and ensure effective embedding of technical areas including Mechanical and Coachbuilding programmes.
  • Standardisation of block format and content and delivery and progress tracking.
  • Ensure annual review of Curriculum content aligned with employer needs.
  • Manage End Point Assessment (EPA) scheduling and apprentice preparedness, including gateway sign-off and progress tracking.
  • Carry out recognition of prior learning (RPL) reviews in collaboration with the Recruitment team. Manage apprentice applications with complex needs eg. EHCP.
  • Monitor, observe, and mentor the Tutors to drive continuous improvement in teaching, learning and assessment. In accordance with the IQA process.

Team and Resource Management

  • Manage and implement the calendar and block scheduling for all delivery sites
  • Line manage a team of 6+ Tutors and Technician, conducting appraisals, performance reviews, and CPD planning.
  • Ensure high quality training environment including vehicles, rigs, consumables and tools are available to support high-quality delivery across all workshops.
  • Manage procurement of equipment and consumables at Bicester in line with budgetary controls.
  • Remotely manage and support our Brooklands team.
  • Oversee the training vehicle fleet to ensure advanced vehicles and Year 1 basic training vehicle fleet are consistently maintained in operational and excellent condition. Manage, maintain and develop new vehicle system training rigs appropriate to the industries needs.

Apprentice and Employer Engagement

  • Ensure the Tutor team communicate regularly with the appropriate Development Coaches regarding any apprentices at risk of leaving or falling behind in their training.
  • Ensure high quality, relevant and informative end of block reports completed by the end of the following Monday.
  • Ensure the Gateway process is carried out effectively and on time.

Operational Delivery

  • Lead Monthly Tutor meetings at Bicester and Brooklands.
  • Undertake occasional delivery on programmes as needed to ensure consistency and address coverage gaps.
  • Development Coach for 4 apprentices to maintain practical involvement in workplace visits to stay current and connected with teaching practice.
  • Actively network and keep feelers out to stay aware of top specialist talent who could help with specialist delivery work.
  • Lead on educational days – e.g Brooklands Innovation academy
  • Commercial courses – management of – scheduling .

Education & Training

Essential
  • Degree or appropriate level qualification in automotive training.
  • Recognised teaching qualification (PGCE/CertEd) & GCSE English & Maths.
  • NB: Evidence required of recent CPD
Desirable
  • Management qualification, IQA qualification (or willingness to gain) (Desirable)

Work Experience

Essential
  • Minimum 2 years' experience in apprenticeship curriculum management
  • Automotive curriculum design management
  • A track record in line managing a team of tutors
  • Experience of self-assessment, tutor observation, and Ofsted inspection readiness
  • Proven record of improving teaching quality and learner outcomes
  • Experience supporting learner issues and safeguarding
  • Experience managing delivery resources and budget allocations
Desirable
  • Heritage sector experience
  • Evidence of acting as Ofsted nominee or supporting inspection

Skills & Knowledge

Essential
  • Strong understanding of QAR, EPA processes, Gateway, and RPL
  • Data literacy – able to analyse retention, progress, and achievement KPIs
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Skilled in scheduling, planning, and coordinating across multiple sites
  • Confident in use of Microsoft Office
Desirable
  • Knowledge of Safeguarding frameworks
