Electromagnetic Design Engineer

Our client designs, develops and tests tailor-made, highly efficient compact electric powertrains, drives, machines and inverters for traction applications for primarily the automotive sector. As part of their global expansion, they are looking for talented Engineers to join our new Research & Development team. They required 1 Junior/Mid level electromagnetic engineer with a couple of years industry experience as well as a more senior candidate who can jump straight into the team and work fairly autonomously. Tasks: Design radial and axial flux automotive traction machines including: * Permanent magnet synchronous motors * Induction motors * Wound-field synchronous motors * Switched reluctance motors Electric motor processing code based on FEA software output for all types of traction motors Design winding systems including: * Random-wound stranded winding * Concentrated winding * Axially inserted hairpin winding * Continuous wave hairpin winding Use FEA software to simulate motor magnetic behaviour Interpret customer system-level requirements and propose best motor topology solution Conduct thermal analysis of motors based on loss calculations Conduct NVH analysis of motors based on force calculations Calibrate simulation performance outputs with dyno and/or in-vehicle measurements Specify materials and be the technical point of contact for suppliers during procurement of motor active parts for prototypes Deliver high-quality technical reports on motor design topics and present solutions to customers Create motor parameter datasets for control system purposes Skills required: Experience in designing and delivering active parts for permanent-magnet synchronous motors Experience in designing one of the following motors on top of permanent-magnet is desired but not essential: * Induction motors * Wound-filed synchronous motors * Switched reluctance motors Excellent knowledge in at least one the following electromagnetic 2D/3D FEA simulation software packages: * JMAG * Opera * Flux * ANSYS Maxwell * MotorCAD * FEMM Knowledge of AC motor control system theory Experience in motor cooling design Understanding of test procedures required to calibrate electromagnetic FEA loss maps Experience in using multi-objective, multi-physic optimisation algorithms to explore the design space of template-based geometries Excellent Matlab and python programming skills Understanding of manufacturing methods of motor active parts
